Opera: Macbeth

by Giuseppe Verdi
Teatro Regio, Turin 2026-02-24 ... 2026-03-07

From February 24 to March 7, 2026, the Teatro Regio Torino presents an unmissable operatic event: Giuseppe Verdi’s “Macbeth”. This production promises an extraordinary fusion of musical genius and theatrical depth. At the podium will be none other than Maestro Riccardo Muti, whose decades-long engagement with Verdi’s oeuvre makes him the foremost interpreter of this score worldwide. His fourth engagement at the Teatro Regio within five years underscores the Maestro’s deep connection to this city and its opera house. Muti will articulate the dark splendor and psychological complexity of Verdi’s music with his inimitable precision and emotional intensity.

The direction for this new production is by Chiara Muti , whose vision promises a profound exploration of the protagonists’ tormented souls. Her staging will delve into the “darkest red”: that of blood shed for thirst of dominion, and of guilt that cannot be washed away. Chiara Muti, who herself has portrayed Lady Macbeth on stage, brings a unique perspective to her direction, where the protagonist’s eyes become windows into his inner world, illuminating the “anatomy of murder.”

In the title role of Macbeth, the acclaimed baritone and actor Luca Micheletti will shine, known for his extraordinary stage presence and intense vocal performance. Alongside him will be an excellent Verdian cast, including Lidia Fridman, Giovanni Sala, and Ildebrando D’Arcangelo. Together, they will bring to life the gripping story of ambition, betrayal, and moral decay.

Verdi’s “Macbeth,” composed in 1847 as a musical setting of Shakespeare’s tragedy, transformed every theatrical element into sound. He enriched the original drama with a new, visionary force that anticipated his future musical style. This production will not only highlight the musical brilliance and dramatic depth of the opera but also illuminate the timeless relevance of its themes in a world fraught with conflict and unease.

Giuseppe Verdi’s “Macbeth,” premiered in 1847, is a groundbreaking work in opera history as it marks Verdi’s first full engagement with William Shakespeare’s dramas – a lifelong passion for the composer. Verdi was obsessed with the idea of translating the psychological depth and grim character of Shakespeare’s tragedy into music. Unlike many of his contemporaries, who often focused on the love stories within Shakespearean plays, Verdi was interested in the moral corruption and lust for power that drives Macbeth and Lady Macbeth.

The opera is renowned for its revolutionary orchestration and the innovative use of the chorus, which often functions as an independent dramatic character, such as in the witch scenes. Verdi placed great emphasis on characterization through music; he instructed his singers to prioritize dramatic effect over mere vocal brilliance. Particularly the role of Lady Macbeth, whom Verdi characterized as “ugly and evil,” demanded a performer who convinced less through beauty than through demonic power and vocal flexibility. The famous aria “Vieni! t’affretta!” and the sleepwalking scene are highlights that masterfully depict Lady Macbeth’s inner turmoil and madness.

“Macbeth” represents a significant step in Verdi’s artistic development, as he broke traditional operatic conventions in favor of greater dramatic coherence. The work was not an immediate unqualified success but was revised by Verdi in 1865 for a Paris performance, where he added the famous ballet music and recomposed several scenes. This revised version is the one most commonly performed today. “Macbeth” remains a timeless masterpiece that vividly illuminates the abyss of the human soul and the destructive power of ambition.
