Giuseppe Verdi’s opera La Traviata will be performed from September 10, 2023 to October 13, 2023 at the Teatro la Fenice in Venice. Giuseppe Verdi composed the opera La Traviata in 1852, which tells the story of a courtesan who “lost their way”. After Rigoletto and Il Trovatore, the leading role is again played by a person who has a questionable reputation in high society. The Italian sung opera La Traviata is one of the most famous operas of all. The story is based on the novel La dame aux camélias (The Lady of the Camellias) by Alexandre Dumas.
The opera premiered at the Teatro La Fenice on March 6, 1853 and it was a disaster. Verdi dared to focus on the suffering of a person ostracized by society. This was an affront to aristocratic society, which faced accusations of immorality. Verdi saw himself and his relationship at the time with his partner, the singer Giuseppina Strepponi, from this perspective. Giuseppina Strepponi had several illegitimate children with Giuseppe Verdi and was therefore considered a “La Traviata” in society.
The first opera season of the reconstructed Teatro La Fenice opened in November 2004 with the Verdi opera La Traviata in a production by Robert Carsen. The production was so successful that it was revived in 2007 and has become a classic in the Teatro La Fenice repertoire.
