One year after the sensational success of Il barbiere di Siviglia, Gioachino Rossini composed La Cenerentola, ossia La bontà in trionfo (1817), a work that deepens his comic genius with shades of sentiment and poetry. The beloved Cinderella story by Charles Perrault, adapted with wit and originality by Jacopo Ferretti—replacing the stepmother with a pompous stepfather and the glass slipper with a bracelet—becomes, in Rossini’s hands, a brilliant balance of tenderness and theatrical flair.
At its heart are Angelina (Cenerentola) and Prince Don Ramiro, whose youthful sincerity and longing unfold in dazzling coloratura passages and expressive melodies. In contrast, the characters of Don Magnifico and the stepsisters bring out Rossini’s gift for exaggerated, humorous characterization rooted in Neapolitan opera buffa.
This new production at Teatro Regio is directed by Manu Lalli, acclaimed for her elegant and humanistic approach at the 2024 Maggio Musicale Fiorentino. The orchestra is led by Antonino Fogliani, a renowned maestro of the bel canto repertoire. Rising star Vasilisa Beržanskaya sings Cinderella, joined by Nico Darmanin, Roberto De Candia, and Carlo Lepore—ensuring a sparkling performance both vocally and theatrically.
Story of Cinderella, or Goodness Triumphant by Giochino Rossini
La Cenerentola was composed in an astonishing three weeks and premiered on January 25, 1817, at Rome’s Teatro Valle. Gioachino Rossini and librettist Jacopo Ferretti were asked to create a new opera at short notice—and turned to the beloved Cinderella tale. Under the subtitle La bontà in trionfo (“Goodness Triumphant”), Rossini reimagined the story not through magic, but through human values such as kindness and forgiveness.
Ferretti made clever adjustments: the evil stepmother became the ridiculous Don Magnifico; the fairy godmother was replaced by the wise tutor Alidoro; and the iconic glass slipper became a bracelet. Rossini’s music enriches this retelling with playful brilliance and heartfelt depth—establishing the opera as a cornerstone of the opera buffa genre and a perennial favorite in theaters around the world.
