Plot and History of the opera "Il turco in Italia"
“Il turco in Italia” is set in Naples, where a variety of colorful characters interact in a story filled with mistaken identities and romantic entanglements. The opera follows the adventures of the Turkish prince Selim, who arrives in Italy and quickly becomes enamored with the flirtatious Fiorilla, much to the dismay of her jealous husband, Geronio. Meanwhile, Narciso, another suitor of Fiorilla, adds to the chaos, as does a poet who is writing a play inspired by the unfolding events. As the characters navigate their comic misunderstandings and pursue their desires, the poet attempts to influence the outcome. Rossini composed the opera at the age of 22, drawing inspiration from the vibrant cultural exchanges between Italy and the Ottoman Empire. Though “Il turco in Italia” did not initially achieve the same level of fame as some of Rossini’s other works, it has since been appreciated for its innovative music and humorous librettos. The Rossini Opera Festival continues to celebrate this delightful opera, showcasing its charm and brilliance to contemporary audiences.
