The Plot of Falstaff
The story revolves around the aging, overweight, and perpetually penniless knight Sir John Falstaff, who schemes to improve his fortunes by seducing two wealthy, married women of Windsor: Alice Ford and Meg Page. He sends them identical love letters, confident of his irresistible charm. The clever women, quickly realizing his ploy, are not offended but amused, and decide to teach him a lesson. They orchestrate a series of humiliating encounters, with the help of the sharp-witted Mrs. Quickly.
Alice’s husband, Ford, becomes consumed by jealousy. Disguised as “Signor Fontana,” he offers Falstaff money to test his wife’s fidelity, only to have his suspicions seemingly confirmed. Meanwhile, a tender subplot unfolds between the young lovers Nannetta, Ford’s daughter, and the penniless Fenton, whose union Ford opposes.
The intrigues culminate in a final, elaborate prank in Windsor Great Park at midnight. Falstaff, lured by the promise of a tryst, is tormented by townspeople disguised as fairies and spirits. In the end, all identities are revealed. Ford consents to his daughter’s marriage, and Falstaff, humbled but irrepressible, leads the entire company in a magnificent final fugue proclaiming, “Tutto nel mondo è burla” – “All the world’s a joke.”
