Set against the backdrop of 16th-century Spain during the reign of King Philip II, the opera centers on the tormented figure of Don Carlo, torn between duty and love. His tragic conflict is set against the larger canvas of religious repression, political tension, and royal betrayal. Teatro San Carlo

This masterpiece comes to life at Naples’ Teatro di San Carlo, the oldest continuously active opera house in the world, renowned for its historical significance and architectural beauty. Built in 1737, the Teatro di San Carlo has hosted some of the greatest names in opera and continues to stand as a symbol of Italian cultural heritage. For the 2024/2025 season, the opera will be presented in a new production, directed by Claus Guth and conducted by Henrik Nánási, ensuring a fresh yet faithful interpretation of Verdi’s vision. The exceptional cast includes Ildar Abdrazakov as King Philip II, Piero Pretti as Don Carlo, and Rachel Willis-Sørensen as Elisabetta di Valois, with a supporting ensemble that brings the full intensity of this historic drama to the stage. Stunning set designs by Etienne Pluss and costumes by Petra Reinhardt will transform the opera house into a vivid depiction of Spanish royalty, adding another layer of grandeur to the experience. Whether you are a lifelong opera aficionado or new to Verdi’s works, “Don Carlo” at Teatro di San Carlo is an event not to be missed.

“Don Carlo” premiered at the Paris Opéra in 1867 and is based on Friedrich Schiller’s dramatic play “Don Carlos, Infant von Spanien”. Originally composed in French, Verdi later adapted the opera into Italian, which became the more commonly performed version. Throughout its history, “Don Carlo” has undergone various revisions, ranging from its five-act original version to a shorter four-act form, reflecting the evolving tastes of both audiences and composers. Despite these changes, the core themes of the opera remain the same, exploring love, loyalty, and political power set against the backdrop of the Spanish Inquisition.

Verdi’s opera was unusual for its time, as it addressed not only personal dilemmas but also significant historical and political themes. It marked a turning point in Verdi’s career, showcasing his ability to balance intimate human emotions with grand, large-scale historical conflicts. The opera’s libretto, written by Joseph Méry and Camille du Locle, expertly translates Schiller’s play into a powerful operatic narrative. Despite initial mixed receptions, “Don Carlo” has grown in stature and is now regarded as one of Verdi’s most profound works, beloved for its complex characters, rich orchestration, and sweeping arias. Today, it is a staple of the international operatic repertoire, captivating audiences around the globe.
