The ballet Caravaggio was created in 2008 by Mauro Bigonzetti for the Staatsballett Berlin, inspired by the striking qualities of dancer Vladimir Malakhov. It is a homage to Michelangelo Merisi da Caravaggio, a master of Italian naturalism and a precursor to the Baroque. Bigonzetti translates Caravaggio’s revolutionary use of chiaroscuro and his ability to highlight the plasticity of human musculature in his works into a sculptural dance language. The music, specially orchestrated by Bruno Moretti from works by Claudio Monteverdi, enhances the emotional depth and drama. World-renowned étoile Roberto Bolle, who previously performed a duo from this ballet in “Bolle and Friends,” now brings the full-length production to the Teatro Regio stage, complemented by striking light designs by Carlo Cerri and visionary costumes by Lois Swandale and Kristopher Millar.
