“Turandot” is an opera in three acts by Giacomo Puccini. The action takes place in ancient China and revolves around the princess Turandot, who poses a series of riddles to her suitors. Those who can solve the puzzles get to marry her, while those who fail lose their lives.
Kalaf, a prince of unknown origin, falls in love with Turandot and faces the riddles to win her heart. With the help of the faithful slave Liù, Kalaf manages to solve the puzzles.On the occasion of the 100th anniversary of the death of Giacomo Puccini, on June 8, 2024, the Fondazione Arena opens on Saturday June 8 the 101st Festival with Turandot, a tribute to Puccini with his most spectacular and fairytale title in the dreamlike production by Franco Zeffirelli with costumes by Oscar winner Emi Wada.
“Turandot” is known for its stirring music, including famous arias like “Nessun dorma” and “Signore, ascolta!”. A masterpiece of the Italian verismo style, the opera offers a mixture of drama, passion and lyricism.
