EDUARDO E CRISTINA • Gioachino Rossini • from August 11th to 20th, 2023
Eduardo e Cristina is an opera in two acts by Gioachino Rossini with a libretto originally created for an opera by Stefano Pavesi by Giovanni Schmidt, which was revised for Rossini by Andrea Leone Tottola and Gherardo Bevilacqua-Aldobrandini. The opera premiered on January 24, 1819, at the Teatro San Benedetto in Venice.
The plot of Eduardo e Cristina is set in Scotland in the 17th century and revolves around the conflict between King Charles II and the rebel Lord Douglas. Eduardo, the son of Lord Douglas, is in love with Cristina, the daughter of the king’s favorite, Lord Gualtiero. However, the two lovers are torn apart by the political conflict between their families and the machinations of Lord Gualtiero and his sister Adelaide.
Act I opens with a chorus of Scottish nobles celebrating the arrival of King Charles II. Lord Douglas, who is leading a rebellion against the king, arrives and is greeted by his son Eduardo, who is in love with Cristina. Cristina arrives and sings a beautiful aria expressing her love for Eduardo. However, Lord Gualtiero arrives and reminds Cristina that she is engaged to him, causing her to renounce her love for Eduardo.
In Act II, Eduardo is captured by the king’s forces and sentenced to death. Cristina is torn between her love for Eduardo and her loyalty to her father, who has promised her hand to Lord Gualtiero. Lord Gualtiero and Adelaide conspire to have Eduardo executed, but in the end, the king pardons him and restores peace to Scotland. Eduardo and Cristina are reunited and sing a joyful duet as the opera ends.
Eduardo e Cristina is a romantic drama that explores themes of love, loyalty, and political conflict. The music is typical of Rossini’s style, with beautiful arias, ensemble numbers, and lively choruses that bring the story to life.
