Alzira | A Rare Gem of the Verdi Repertoire

A landmark musical event of historical importance inaugurates the XXVI Festival Verdi 2026 in Parma: with “Alzira,” the Festival presents one of Giuseppe Verdi’s rarely performed operas, paving the way for the coming years of discovery. The Festival’s central theme is “Mondi Lontani” (Distant Worlds) – a concept that captures the 19th-century European fascination with the exotic while illuminating the tension and coexistence of different cultures at the heart of Verdi’s dramas.

“Alzira” (premiered in 1845) transports the audience to 16th-century Peru, narrating a gripping tale of love, jealousy, and conflict between the Spanish conquerors and the indigenous peoples. The critical edition curated by Stefano Castelvecchi, Jonathan Cheskin, The University of Chicago Press, and Casa Ricordi guarantees a musical presentation of the highest authenticity.

At the podium of the ORCHESTRA FILARMONICA TOSCANINI stands the celebrated Verdi expert James Conlon , whose authority and deep understanding of the Italian repertoire promise a gripping interpretation. The production is helmed by Manuel Renga, who brings a fresh perspective to this early work, marked by dramatic urgency, with a new staging at the Teatro Regio di Parma.

The cast brings together some of the most distinguished Verdi voices, including Marta Torbidoni in the title role, Antonio Poli as Zamoro, and Alessio Cacciamani and Daniel Luis de Vincente. The vocal stars are powerfully supported by the CORO DEL TEATRO REGIO DI PARMA led by Martino Faggiani. An evening that not only revives an operatic jewel but also offers a profound reflection on Verdi’s view of distant worlds and intercultural conflicts.

The Power of Exoticism and Cultural Conflict

Alzira is an opera by Giuseppe Verdi from 1845, based on a play by Voltaire and set against the backdrop of the Spanish conquest of Peru. In line with the festival theme “Mondi Lontani” (Distant Worlds), this piece transports the audience to an exotic, foreign setting that was so fascinating to 19th-century European culture. The opera revolves around the classic love triangle between the beautiful Inca maiden Alzira, her lover Zamoro (an indigenous warrior), and the Spanish governor Gusmano, who desires Alzira. The libretto, written in just 20 days, may seem compressed, but it seethes with dramatic intensity, love, revenge, and political conflict. Musically, Alzira is characterized by its energy and early melodic momentum, typical of Verdi’s so-called “galley years.” The performance of the critical edition restores musical fidelity to the text, allowing for a re-evaluation of this often-underestimated work through 21st-century eyes. James Conlon as conductor guarantees a stylistically sound and passionate interpretation, while Manuel Renga’s new staging (Nuovo allestimento) will focus on the visual and narrative layers of the intercultural conflict.
