DANIELE RUSTIONI / Brahms / Berlioz | La Scala Milan

Program and Artists

This Symphony Concert at Teatro alla Scala presents a delightful contrast between German Romanticism and French Proto-Romanticism.

  • Johannes Brahms (1833–1897): Academic Festival Overture Op. 80 This overture is Brahms’s ironically humorous response to being awarded an honorary doctorate. It combines traditional form with folk-like themes (including four student songs), giving it a joyful and celebratory character.
  • Johannes Brahms: Schicksalslied (Song of Destiny) Op. 54 Based on a poem by Friedrich Hölderlin, this work contrasts the heavenly tranquility of the gods with the suffering destiny of mortals. It is a deeply moving, melancholic piece for chorus and orchestra, demonstrating Brahms’s mastery in handling emotional tension and lyrical beauty.
  • Hector Berlioz (1803–1869): Symphonie fantastique Op. 14 The “Fantastic Symphony” is a key work of program music and Berlioz’s autobiographical reckoning with an unhappy love affair. It is renowned for its bold orchestration, innovative sound effects (such as the use of the tuba), and the leitmotivic idea, the “idée fixe,” which represents the beloved across various dramatic scenes – from a ball to a witches’ sabbath.

The Artists

  • Daniele Rustioni is an internationally acclaimed Italian conductor, known for his energetic, detailed, and dramatically convincing interpretations. He is currently the Music Director of the Opéra National de Lyon and a regular guest conductor at leading opera and concert houses worldwide. His connection to La Scala is a guarantee of a particularly passionate performance.
  • Alberto Malazzi is the Chorus Master of the Teatro alla Scala Chorus, ensuring the high vocal precision and expressiveness of the ensemble in Brahms’s Schicksalslied.
