At Teatro di San Carlo, the magnificent opera house renowned for its world-class productions and historic legacy, Un Ballo in Maschera promises to be a spectacular event.

The opera, set in the 18th-century court of King Gustav III of Sweden (or, in some productions, the governor of colonial Boston), follows the tragic fate of Riccardo, the ruler, as he falls victim to a conspiracy led by his once-loyal friend Renato. The opera’s plot unfolds amidst masked balls, passionate love triangles, and the ominous predictions of a fortune-teller, all leading to a heart-stopping climax. Un Ballo in Maschera premiered on February 17, 1859, at the Teatro Apollo in Rome.

Verdi had long been fascinated by the story of King Gustav III of Sweden, who was assassinated during a masked ball in 1792. However, strict censorship in the 19th century meant that Verdi and his librettist, Antonio Somma, had to make several revisions to the original plot to appease authorities. The opera’s subject matter—an assassination of a head of state—was considered too controversial in Italy, which was experiencing political instability at the time. As a result, the setting was moved from Sweden to colonial Boston, and the main character, King Gustav, became Riccardo, the governor of Boston. Despite these changes, Verdi’s ability to convey intense human emotions—love, jealousy, betrayal, and vengeance—remained the heart of the opera, and Un Ballo in Maschera was an instant success.

Under the direction of conductor Pinchas Steinberg, this production will showcase an extraordinary cast, including Piero Pretti and Vincenzo Costanzo as Riccardo, and Anna Netrebko and Valeria Sepe as Amelia, the woman at the center of Riccardo and Renato’s tragic conflict. Ludovic Tézier and Ernesto Petti take on the powerful role of Renato, whose heartbreak and thirst for revenge drive the drama to its inevitable, tragic conclusion. Massimo Gasparon directs the staging, based on an original concept by Pierluigi Samaritani, with lush set and costume designs by Samaritani himself.
