“Roméo et Juliette” premiered in Paris in 1867 at the Théâtre Lyrique and quickly became one of Charles Gounod’s most celebrated operas. The libretto, written by Jules Barbier and Michel Carré, is a faithful adaptation of Shakespeare’s play, focusing on the central love story while streamlining the action to fit the operatic form. Gounod, who was already famous for his opera “Faust”, brought a lyrical and dramatic intensity to “Roméo et Juliette” that resonated with audiences. His score is filled with moments of breathtaking beauty, including the famous “Je veux vivre” aria sung by Juliette and the intimate duets between the lovers, which have become staples of the operatic repertoire.

Despite some initial skepticism about whether Shakespeare’s tragedy could be effectively transformed into an opera, Gounod succeeded in creating a work that has endured through the centuries. While the opera includes some changes from the original play—such as an extended focus on the lovers’ relationship and a more prominent role for Friar Laurent—it retains the tragic essence of the source material. Over the years, “Roméo et Juliette” has been performed in major opera houses around the world and continues to be beloved for its melodic richness, emotional depth, and Gounod’s ability to capture the youthful passion and devastating sorrow of its protagonists.
