Experience the magic of the opera L’Elisir d’Amore under the stars! Following last summer’s success, the Teatro del Maggio Fiorentino once again transforms its rooftop Cavea into an open-air stage for one of the most beloved operas of all time: L’elisir d’amore by Gaetano Donizetti. This spectacular production will take place in a modern urban park setting, designed by director Roberto Catalano to harmonize with the stunning outdoor space.
Superintendent Carlo Fuortes highlights the Cavea’s unique acoustics, which allow the orchestra, chorus, and singers to perform without electronic amplification, creating an intimate and authentic opera experience. The performance opens with a nostalgic childhood scene of Adina, playfully swinging in the park, before transitioning into the present, where the tale of Tristan’s love potion sets the story in motion.
Balancing comedy, romance, and moments of deep emotion—especially in Nemorino’s famous aria “Una furtiva lagrima”—this production promises an unforgettable evening. Don’t miss this enchanting open-air opera event at one of Italy’s most prestigious theaters!
The Story of The Elisir d’Amore
L’elisir d’amore is a delightful comic opera by Gaetano Donizetti, filled with romance, humor, and heartfelt emotions. The story follows Nemorino, a shy young man who is hopelessly in love with the beautiful and wealthy Adina. When he hears of a magical love potion that can make anyone fall in love, he seeks the help of the cunning Doctor Dulcamara, who sells him an “elixir” (actually cheap wine).
Believing in the potion’s power, Nemorino gains confidence, but Adina, amused by his antics, decides to marry the boastful soldier Belcore out of spite. However, when Nemorino inherits a fortune and suddenly becomes desirable, Adina realizes her true feelings for him. In the end, love prevails, and the two find happiness together. Featuring the famous aria “Una furtiva lagrima”, this opera remains one of the most beloved works in the repertoire.

The summer theater, the “Cavea del Maggio,” will also return in July 2025 with one of the most popular operas of all time, Gaetano Donizetti’s “Elixir of Love.” The open-air theater be set up on the roof of the Maggior Musicale Fiorentino opera house, allowing you to experience the popular opera under the stars of Florence. Last summer, Rossini’s opera “The Barber of Seville” enjoyed huge audience success in the open air.
The artistic director of the Maggio Fiorentino, Carlo Fuortes, is thus continuing the initiative launched last summer and enthusiastically received by the audience. Thanks to the beautiful ambiance and the excellent acoustics, which require no electronic amplification for the orchestra, choir, and singers, the Cavea will become an integral part of the summer program.
Director Roberto Catalano designed a set that harmonizes with the cavea’s open-air space and the newly designed stage. The new production is set in a modern city park, where the story unfolds. The opera begins with a scene from Adina’s childhood, depicting her as a little girl on a park swing. A musical leap forward in time then shows her as an adult—playful yet capricious—leafing through the book that tells the story of Tristan’s love potion, the inspiration for the opera’s plot.
