Stabat Mater • Rossini Festival | August 23
ROF 2026 Finale: Rossini’s moving “Stabat Mater” at Scavolini Auditorium. Sacred masterpiece conducted by Domingo Hindoyan (Aug 23).

The ceremonial finale of the Rossini Opera Festival 2026 is marked by Rossini’s deeply moving “Stabat Mater”. Composed between 1831 and 1841, this sacred work is one of the most poignant and dramatic settings of the medieval hymn about the suffering of Mary at the foot of the Cross of Christ. In this composition, Rossini seamlessly blended the emotional depth of sacred music with the dramatic and virtuosic style of his operas.
The final concert takes place on Sunday, August 23, 2026, at 8:30 PM in the Auditorium Scavolini. The performance will be conducted by Domingo Hindoyan, a conductor celebrated for his passionate and nuanced interpretations. The Stabat Mater is a rare opportunity to experience the master’s serious side and provides a dignified, emotional conclusion to this year’s festival. It unites choir, orchestra, and outstanding soloists for an unforgettable spiritual and musical experience.

Program
Rossini’s Stabat Mater is structured into ten musical movements. The composition effortlessly moves between profound devotion and operatic drama, characteristic of Rossini’s late period. Highlights include the famous quartet “Quando corpus morietur,” the haunting tenor solo “Cujus animam gementem,” and the virtuosic finale “In sempiterna saecula, Amen.” The maestro applied his full bel canto expertise to interpret the biblical scene musically. The score demands the highest technical and emotional brilliance from the four soloists and the choir, while the orchestra provides a dynamic and colourful accompaniment that captures the deeply human feelings of sorrow and ultimate hope.
