Opera: L’occasione fa il ladro (Opportunity Makes a Thief)

by Gioachino Rossini
Rossini Opera Festival 2026-08-12 ... 2026-08-20

For lovers of brilliant bel canto, a true gem returns at the Rossini Opera Festival 2026: Rossini’s “L’occasione fa il ladro” (Burletta per musica in one act). Premiered in Venice in 1812, this opera is a masterpiece of mistaken identity, where a simple swapped suitcase turns the destiny of two travellers completely upside down.

This production, running from August 12 to 20, 2026 at the Teatro Rossini, revives the legendary 1987 staging by Jean-Pierre Ponnelle, restaged here by Sonja Frisell. Maestro Alessandro Bonato will conduct the orchestra, ensuring Rossini’s sparkling musical lightness shines through. Come and witness how witty servants, mixed identities, and love itself prove the point: it is often just the occasion that makes the thief (of hearts). A must-see for fans of classic opera buffa!

During a storm at a country inn, Count Alberto and Don Parmenione mistakenly swap their suitcases. Parmenione finds Alberto’s passport and a charming portrait in the wrong luggage, incorrectly believing it to be the image of Alberto’s fiancée, Marchesa Berenice. He decides to impersonate Alberto to marry her. Meanwhile, Berenice switches clothes with her maid Ernestina to test her betrothed’s sincerity. When the real Alberto arrives, he instantly falls for Berenice disguised as a maid. A comical confusion ensues, which is only resolved when the mix-ups expose true feelings and Parmenione discovers that Ernestina is the woman he was initially travelling to find.
