The Rossini Opera Festival 2026 presents the spirited farce “La Scala di Seta” (The Silken Ladder) as its third main opera. This farsa comica, premiered in Venice in 1812, is considered one of Rossini’s early strokes of genius, characterized by its sparkling energy and the famous, virtuosic overture.
From August 13 to 22, 2026, the acclaimed production staged by Damiano Michieletto (conceived in 2009) returns to the stage of the Teatro Rossini. Conductor Iván López Reynoso will lead the ensemble through the turbulent twists and turns of this comedy of errors. The opera tells a story of secret love, nocturnal visits, and the titular ladder, which serves as a prop for chaotic scenes. An absolute delight for anyone who loves Rossini’s youthful musicality and comedic flair!
The Package

The Story of La Scala di Seta
The opera is set in the home of Giulia’s guardian, Dormont. Giulia is secretly married to the young officer Dorvil, who climbs into her room every night using a silken ladder lowered from her balcony. However, Dormont intends to marry Giulia off to the wealthy Blansac. When Blansac arrives, he witnesses a fit of jealousy sparked by Dorvil’s presence. Through quick wit and white lies, Giulia and her cousin Lucilla manage to save the situation and successfully pair Blansac with Lucilla. After Dormont discovers the secret marriage, he eventually gives his blessing. The silken ladder itself serves as a humorous symbol for the nocturnal complications arising from the clandestine union.
