An Opera in the Winter Lagoon
Venice in winter is an experience of quiet magic. When fog drifts over the canals and the alleys empty, the city reveals a melancholic beauty that stands in stark contrast to the summer crowds. It is precisely into this atmosphere that the Teatro La Fenice places one of Giuseppe Verdi’s darkest and most compelling operas, “Simon Boccanegra,” from January 23 to February 14, 2026. This masterpiece, a political thriller about power, lost love, and the painful search for reconciliation, perfectly mirrors the solemn and contemplative mood of the winter lagoon city.
The performance series offers a unique opportunity to experience two facets of Venice. The earlier dates take place during a quiet, almost meditative period, ideal for fully immersing oneself in the opera’s dramatic depth. However, towards the end of the run, from February 7 to 17, the city awakens for the world-famous Carnival. The silence gives way to an explosion of colors, masks, and festivities. Attending the opera during these days combines high culture with one of the world’s most extravagant festivals.
Plan your trip wisely: during the Carnival season, hotel prices reach their winter peak. Yet, the experience of stepping out from a stirring performance of “Simon Boccanegra” into the vibrant bustle of the Carnival is unparalleled, making the visit an unforgettable journey for all the senses.

Plot and Background of Simon Boccanegra
A Web of Power, Love, and Betrayal
“Simon Boccanegra” is set in 14th-century Genoa, a city torn apart by bitter power struggles between the plebeians and the patricians. The opera, with a libretto by Francesco Maria Piave, is based on a play by Antonio García Gutiérrez.
Prologue:
The plebeian Simon Boccanegra, a former corsair, is elected Doge of Genoa. He mourns his beloved Maria, the daughter of the patrician Jacopo Fiesco, who was imprisoned by her father and has died. Their daughter disappeared without a trace years ago. Fiesco, filled with hatred for Boccanegra, whom he blames for his daughter’s death, swears revenge.
25 years later:
Boccanegra is a powerful but lonely ruler. He does not know that his long-lost daughter is living nearby under the name Amelia Grimaldi. She is in love with the young patrician Gabriele Adorno, who has joined a conspiracy against the Doge. In one of the most moving scenes in operatic history, Boccanegra recognizes Amelia as his daughter.
The plot thickens when the scheming Paolo Albiani, who desires both Amelia and power, plans to poison Boccanegra. Adorno, mistakenly convinced that Boccanegra is his rival, also intends to kill him. Amelia manages to prevent the catastrophe and reveal the true circumstances. In the final act, as the wedding of Amelia and Adorno is celebrated, the deadly poison takes effect. Dying, Boccanegra reconciles with his old enemy Fiesco, to whom he entrusts his rediscovered granddaughter, and names Gabriele Adorno his successor. The opera ends with the tragic death of a man torn between personal happiness and the burden of state power.
