Giacomo Puccini’s “Madama Butterfly” stands as one of the most emotionally charged masterpieces in opera history. Teatro La Fenice presents the deeply moving tragedy of the young geisha Cio-Cio-San in a highly acclaimed, visually stunning staging by Spanish director Àlex Rigola. The minimalist, timeless set design and visionary costumes created by the world-renowned Japanese artist Mariko Mori lend a unique, poetic aesthetic to this profound drama.
Conducted by Daniele Callegari and brought to life by a stellar international cast, this painful tale of false hope, devotion, and cultural misunderstanding becomes a truly unforgettable experience within the breathtaking, historic auditorium of Venice’s legendary opera house.

Plot of Madama Butterfly
Nagasaki, around 1900: American naval officer Pinkerton enters into a marriage of convenience with the fifteen-year-old geisha Cio-Cio-San, known as Butterfly. While he views the union as a temporary adventure, Butterfly falls deeply in love, renounces her family, and converts to Christianity. Soon after, Pinkerton returns to America. For three years, Butterfly waits faithfully against all advice, raising the son Pinkerton knows nothing about. When Pinkerton finally returns with his new American wife, Kate, intending to take the child back to the US, Butterfly’s world shatters as she faces the bitter reality of his betrayal. Seeing no other way out, she chooses death over dishonor. After a heartbreaking farewell to her son, she commits ritual suicide (seppuku) using her father’s blade, inscribed with the words: “He who cannot live with honor shall die with honor.”
