The Arena Sferisterio is one of the most extraordinary theaters in the world with exceptionally good acoustics. This is created by a high-arched wall with columns that form the stage. This creates a kind of resonance box, whereby the audience feels like they are sitting in an ear cup, a pleasure for sensitive ears. Since there is no barrier between the audience and the stage, the audience is very close to the opera singers. At the Macerata Opera Festival, the audience becomes part of the opera scene.
The open-air splendor of the Arena Sferisterio serves as the perfect backdrop, adding a touch of magic to this operational masterpiece. The Story of Turandot
In the mythical land of Peking, Giacomo Puccini’s “Turandot” weaves a tale of love, riddles, and sacrifice. The opera follows the relentless Princess Turandot, whose heart remains ice-cold until a fearless suitor, Calaf, takes on the challenge of solving three enigmatic riddles to win her hand. Amidst the grandeur of ancient China, the opera unfolds with dramatic intensity, exploring the tension between Turandot’s icy pride and Calaf’s unwavering determination. The poignant subplot introduces Liù, a slave girl, whose selfless love for Calaf adds a tender touch to the narrative. As Puccini’s final and unfinished masterpiece, “Turandot” invites you into a world of passion, mystery, and exquisite music, creating an operatic experience that resonates long after the final note. Join us on this emotional odyssey at the Macerata Opera Festival 2024, where the magic of Puccini meets the enchanting ambiance of the Arena Sferisterio.
