The opera I due Foscari (The Two Foscari) by Giuseppe Verdi was first performed in Rome in 1844. The libretto was written by Francesco Maria Piave, based on Lord Byron’s play The Two Foscari.
Set in Venice, this three-act opera tells the story of Doge Francesco Foscari, who was deposed in 1457.
It is about the power struggle within the ruling Venetian families, where corruption, baseness and murder are used to fight for power. The opera ends with Lorendano’s revenge and the death of old Francesco Foscari on the day he was overthrown.
