From June 26 to September 9, the 2026 Arena Opera Festival presents Giuseppe Verdi’s Nabucco, a cornerstone of operatic history and a powerful celebration of music, freedom, and faith. This beloved masterpiece will come alive in the breathtaking setting of the Arena di Verona, one of the world’s most iconic open-air theaters. Under the expert batons of conductors Michele Spotti and Sebastiano Rolli, the ancient Roman amphitheater provides an extraordinary stage for a stellar cast of world-class voices.

History of the Opera
Nabucco premiered in 1842 at Milan’s La Scala and marked Giuseppe Verdi’s breakthrough as a composer. At a time of personal and professional struggles, Verdi was deeply inspired by Temistocle Solera’s libretto, based on the biblical story of the Babylonian exile. The opera is a tale of conflict, love, betrayal, and redemption, with the Hebrew slaves’ chorus, “Va, pensiero,” standing out as its emotional core. This chorus struck a chord with audiences, resonating with the Italian people’s longing for unity and freedom during a time of national unrest.
Verdi’s masterful blend of music and drama in Nabucco redefined the Italian opera tradition, emphasizing collective emotion over individual arias. The characters, from the tormented King Nabucco to the vengeful Abigaille, showcase complex human struggles, making the opera as relevant today as it was in the 19th century.
