Opera: Romeo and Juliet (Roméo et Juliette)

by Charles Gounod
La Scala, Milan

The highlight of our 3 day / 2 nights Milan music trip is a visit to the Teatro alla Scala to see a magnificient performance in a world famous environment with global stars.
The opera Romeo and Juliet is based on the tragic love story of two young people in Verona which has first been told in poetry by Arthur Brooke in 1562. Shakespeare borrowed the story and created a play from it. In this adaption by Bartlett Sher, we are presented with a celebrated Opera with the music composed by Charles Gounod in 1867. The opera has a running time of 2 hours 55 minutes intermission included.

The 3 day city trip includes the hotel in your selected category, a gourmet dinner on the evening of the first day, a private walking tour of the city with a guide in your language, a visit to the La Scala Museum, premium tickets for the selected event at the Teatro alla Scala, and an aperitif before the performance. The schedule and program have been well accepted by our clients and we receive many compliments. However, should you wish to adjust the program, to maybe have a different private sightseeing tour or rather spend the day shopping, add an excursion to Lago di Como, an excursion to Cremona to the Stradivari Museum, then please let us know. The itinerary can be customized to your needs.

The performance starts like the West Side Story, with a street brawl between servants of two wealthy families of Verona. Romeo belongs to one and Julia to the other family. However, Romeo falls in love with Julia ignoring the background. They marry quickly and how could it be different, fighting starts in the celebrations. One kills another and Romeo kills the aggressor. Romeo has to run and leave Julia behind. Both are heartbroken.

Juliet’s father, tired of the drama, decides his daughter should marry someone else. And now it gets weirder. Panik. Julia pretends to have died laying in a tomb waiting for Romeo to pick her up. Romeo doesn’t know the plan, finds Julia “dead” and kills himself in distress. Julia wakes up, sees her dead lover and kills herself as well, just to meet again in the afterlife. The good thing in the end, the two families end their feud.
