The Story of Cavalleria Rusticana
Premiered in Rome in 1890, Pietro Mascagni’s “Cavalleria Rusticana” instantly established verismo – a new, realistic style in Italian opera. Based on Giovanni Verga’s novella, it portrays the passions and conflicts of ordinary people driven by honor, desire, and vengeance.
The story centers on Santuzza, betrayed by her lover Turiddu, whose infidelity leads to a fatal confrontation. Mascagni’s music combines lyrical beauty with explosive drama, capturing the heat and emotional intensity of Sicilian life.
With its unforgettable Intermezzo and powerful choruses, “Cavalleria Rusticana” remains one of the most moving works in the operatic repertoire. In the Teatro Massimo Palermo’s new production, Mascagni’s timeless tale of love and tragedy returns to its spiritual homeland in vivid and deeply human form.
