Handel’s Baroque opera from the early 18th century will captivate you for almost 4 hours. It plays the orchestra of the Teatro alla Scala on historical instruments. The conductor is Giovanni Antonini.
The opera in 3 acts takes place in the years 45-49 BC at the time of the Roman Civil Wars. It is sung in Italian. The place of action is Egypt. The plot goes something like this:
Caesar pursues his enemy Pompeo and thus arrives in Egypt. Pompeo’s wife, Cornelia, pleads that her husband be spared. But then the Egyptians under King Tolomeo bring The Head of Pompeo. Cornelia and her son Sesto swearing revenge. Tolomeo’s sister Cleopatra, however, has other plans. She wants to become the ruler of Egypt. Caesar supports the supposed campaign of revenge, falls in love with the beautiful Cleopatra and the story takes its course.
