Boris Godunov is the opera chosen for the premiere of the new 2022/2023 season at the Teatro alla Scala, which takes place every year on December 7th, the day of the patron saint of Milan. Tsar Boris Godunov will be sung by the famous Russian bass Ildar Abdrazakov. Modest Mussorgsky’s opera premiered in Italy in 1909. In 2022, Kasper Holten, former director of Covent Garden, will direct. Riccardo Chailly conducts the opera drama. The opera is sung throughout in Russian by Russian singers.

History

Boris Godunov was the Tsar of Russia from 1598 to 1605. The opera is based on the drama by Aleksander Pushkin and on the story of the founding of the Russian state. The libretto to the opera was written by Modest Mussorgsky himself. The story tells about power and its loneliness and brutality. On December 7th, the Russian opera “Boris Godunov” by Modest Petrovich Mussorgsky will premiere in Russian.
