Giuseppe Verdi’s opera Ernani will be performed at the Teatro la Fenice in Venice from March 16th to 28th, 2023. Ernani is an opera in four acts by Giuseppe Verdi to a libretto by Francesco Maria Piave based on the play of the same name by Victor Hugo. The premiere took place on March 9, 1844 at the Teatro La Fenice. The exciting opera takes place in 1519 in a castle in Aragon as well as in Aachen and Zaragoza. Ernani became the leader of a gang of robbers after his father was killed by the Spanish royal family and Ernani was expelled from the nobility. Ernani’s lover, Elvira, is to be married against her will to Duke Silva. But the Spanish King Carlo is also keen on Elvira. When Ernani and Carlo meet, Ernani recognizes the king as his father’s murderer and challenges him. After confusion and disguises as well as political entanglements, Ernani places himself in Silva’s hands. When everything is already looking forward to a happy ending, drama ensues and Ernani stabs himself. The opera ERNANI was one of the most performed Verdi operas in the 19th century. The 2023 new production by La Fenice Theater Foundation will be staged in co-production with Palau de les Arts Reina Sofía in Valencia.
