Peter Grimes

Peter Grimes from 18 October to 2 November 2023

The opera Peter Grimes was composed by Benjamin Britten. It is set on the harsh east coast of England around 1830, where storms made life a daily struggle for fishermen. The opera consists of a prologue and three acts. Montagu Slater’s libretto is based on the character of Peter Grimes in George Crabbe’s book The Borough. The opera premiered in London in 1945. The new production at La Scala in Milan from October 18 to November 2, 2023 is directed by Robert Carsen. The fisherman Grimes is suspected by the people of murdering his apprentice. When Peter Grimes takes on a new apprentice despite warnings and he dies in an accident, the angry crowd swears revenge on Peter Grimes. When a boat sinks at sea, the people are content.
