Giuseppe Verdi‘s opera Macbeth was first performed in Florence in 1847. The libretto was by Francesco Maria Piave and Andrea Maffei based on the original by William Shakespeare. The dark opera about power and murder takes place in Scotland in the 11th century. The main actors are Macbeth, who murders the king and becomes king himself, and his wife Lady Macbeth spins the intrigues and incites the murder. When her conscience calls in later, she goes insane. In the end, Macbeth also falls in the fight against Macduff and Malcolm is crowned the new king. The historical background is the time of the Scottish King Macbeth from 1040 to 1057.
