The Rake’s Progress from March 12 to 26, 2023

Igor Stravinsky’s opera The Rake’s Progress will be performed at the Teatro Maggio Musicale Fiorentino in Florence from March 12 to 26, 2023.
The Rake’s Progress is an opera in three acts to a libretto by Wystan Hugh Auden and Chester Kallman.
Stravinsky  came up with the idea for the opera after moving to the USA, when he saw the copper engraving series A Rake’s Progress by the English painter and engraver William Hogarth at an exhibition.
He was fascinated by the story of the rise and fall of Tom Rakewell. He was a bon vivant and spendthrift who squandered his and others’ property, gambled away his money and had numerous affairs. In the end, Rakewell ends up in a mental asylum.
The premiere of the opera The Rake’s Progress took place in 1951 at the Teatro La Fenice in Venice.
