Damiano Michieletto directed the opera Salome 2021 exclusively for television. After the theater closures, the production of Salome can finally be performed in front of an audience.
Zubin Mehta conducts the opera with which he made his La Scala debut in 1974. The stage design by Paolo Fantin with strict geometric scenes and a menacing black moon underlines the somber scene of the tragedy. The Lithuanian soprano Vida Mikneviciute makes her debut at La Scala as Salome. Michael Volle interprets the Jochanaan with his impressive voice.

The Story
The opera Salome in one act with four scenes by Richard Strauss is based on the drama by Oscar Wilde. The opera is set in a palace in Galilee. The prophet Jochanaan, John the Baptist, is trapped in a cistern and is freed by Narraboth. The young princess Salome sees the prophet Jochanaan and falls in love with him, whereupon Narraboth, disappointed, stabs herself. Jochanaan rejects Salome and returns to the cistern, from where he calls out prophecies and curses to the party above. Salome dances the dance of the seven veils for Herod and wishes for the head of Saint Jochanaan on a silver platter. Salome kisses the head of the dead Jochanaan in the frenzy of love and Herod has Salome killed.
