Verona is world famous for the Opera Festival in the Arena di Verona, which attracts millions of music lovers every summer. The Arena di Verona is the world’s largest open-air opera theatre with space for up to 22,000 spectators on the steps of the 45 rows of seats.
Verona is a city of music and opera, especially in summer. The Three Tenors Placido Domingo, Luciano Pavarotti and Josè Carreras were regulars in Verona. The Verona Festival started in 1913 with the performance of Aida on the occasion of Giuseppe Verdi’s 100th birthday. RIGOLETTO – Arena di Verona Opera Festival 2023
Giuseppe Verdi’s opera Rigoletto is a hit and will be performed at the Arena di Verona during the 2023 Summer Festival.
The libretto is by Francesco Maria Piave. The basis for the opera was the melodrama Le Roi s’amuse by Victor Hugo. Rigoletto was first performed at the Teatro La Fenice in Venice in 1851 and was the worldwide breakthrough of Giuseppe Verdi‘s operas.
The opera in three acts was a resounding success when it premiered in Venice, from where Rigoletto quickly spread to opera houses in Italy.
The opera is set in the city of Mantua. Rigoletto is the court jester who draws the duke’s curse on himself through mockery. The duke wants to take revenge on Rigoletto’s daughter Gilda, who falls in love with the duke. The opera ends dramatically with the death of Gilda.
