Giuseppe Verdi wrote the Messa da Requiem as a setting of the text of the funeral mass for Gioachino Rossini, who died in 1868, and for Alessandro Manzoni. The Milanese writer (I Promessi Sposi) died on May 22nd, 1873.
On the first anniversary of Manzoni’s death, the Verdi Requiem was premiered in the Church of San Marco in Milan.
