The Story of La Traviata

La Traviata is an opera in three acts by Giuseppe Verdi , with a libretto by Francesco Maria Piave. The story is based on La Dame aux Camélias, a play by Alexandre Dumas fils. The opera tells the story of a tragic love affair between Violetta Valéry, a Parisian courtesan, and Alfredo Germont, a young nobleman.

• Act I: Violetta is hosting a lavish party at her home in Paris, where she is introduced to Alfredo by her friend Gastone. Alfredo expresses his love for Violetta in the famous aria “Libiamo ne’ lieti calici” (Let’s drink from the joyful cups). Violetta is touched by Alfredo’s sincerity and agrees to see him again.
• Act II: Violetta has left her life as a courtesan and is living with Alfredo in the country. However, Alfredo’s father, Giorgio Germont, comes to visit and asks Violetta to leave Alfredo, as their relationship is ruining his family’s reputation. In the famous aria “Di Provenza il mar” (From Provence’s sea), Giorgio reminds Alfredo of his responsibilities to his family and convinces him to leave Violetta. Violetta, heartbroken, decides to sacrifice her own happiness for Alfredo’s future and leaves him.
• Act III: Several months have passed, and Violetta is seriously ill with tuberculosis. Alfredo, who has learned the truth about why Violetta left him, rushes to her side. In the famous aria “Parigi, o cara” (Paris, my love), the couple expresses their undying love for each other, but Violetta’s health rapidly deteriorates. She dies in Alfredo’s arms, surrounded by her friends.
