Opera LA TRAVIATA
Giuseppe Verdi

LA TRAVIATA • Jun-18 2021 | Teatro San Carlo, Napoli
A music trip to Naples can be a wonderful combination. The city offers excellent culinary attractions and a cityscape that is best explored on foot with a private guide. You are constantly reminded of the volcano that spilled over Pompeii almost 2,000 years ago. Today this is a worthwhile destination. And then Amalfi invites to a long day trip or a connecting stay. Also Capri, Ischia and the Aeolian Islands. You could easily spend months there.
But the highlight of your musical journey is the visit to the Teatro San Carlo to a performance of your choice.

Although Traviata remains the most played opera in over a century, it was not appreciated at the première in Venice in 1853. Verdi was very impressed by Dumas’ play La Dame aux camèlias that he saw in Paris, advised by Giuseppina Strepponi. He actually met her in Paris and kept the relationship going for his entire life. Moved by the play Verdi decided to take a leap forward and break some of the operatic conventions that did not allow the depiction of contemporary life in the mise en scène. Marguerite depicts Marie Duplessis, a courtesan and Dumas’ ex-lover, who had died of tuberculosis 6 years before at age 23. Verdi’s Violetta is also a homage to Paris and to modernity. In his version Özpetek sets Traviata at the beginning of Novecento, between “champagne and hookahs”, adding elegant strokes of Ottoman exoticism with his brush, keeping close, however, to the composer’s original groundbreaking structure. The revival of this beloved show at San Carlo comes attached to Butterfly as an ideal diptych.
