IL VIAGGIO A REIMS • Gioachino Rossini • August 16 & 18, 2023

Il Viaggio a Reims is an operatic dramma giocoso in one act composed by Gioachino Rossini  in 1825. The libretto, by Luigi Balocchi and Carlo Pepoli, tells the story of a group of European aristocrats who are traveling to attend the coronation of King Charles X of France. The opera is known for its elaborate ensembles and sparkling vocal writing, as well as its light-hearted and satirical tone.

The plot of Il Viaggio a Reims revolves around the various characters’ encounters and conflicts as they journey to Reims. The characters include a Russian princess, a Polish countess, a French diplomat, an Englishman, and many others, all of whom are vying for the attention of each other and the audience. The opera features a large ensemble cast, with many of the roles being written specifically for famous singers of the time.

Although Il Viaggio a Reims was a great success when it premiered, it was only performed a few times during Rossini’s lifetime and eventually fell out of favor. However, in the 20th century, it was rediscovered and revived, becoming a favorite of opera companies and audiences alike. Today, it is considered one of Rossini’s most entertaining and charming works, showcasing the composer’s gift for melody, humor, and ensemble writing.
