Fidelio is the only opera by Ludwig van Beethoven
The original title was Leonore, the name of the protagonist and heroine. It is about the triumph of love and loyalty in marriage against all external resistance.
Leonore’s husband Florestan is in jail for political offenses. In order to save her husband from death, his wife Leonore disguises herself as a prison guard and calls herself “Fidelio”. The name Fidelio comes from a Shakespeare romance in which the king’s daughter with the name Fidelio also wears men’s clothes.
Florestan has a vision that Leonore will come as an angel to save him.
The opera is peppered with beautiful melodies like the prisoner’s choir (O what lust – “O what a joy”), as an ode to freedom.
