Falstaff

“Falstaff” is a comedic opera composed by Giuseppe Verdi, which premiered in 1893. The libretto was written by Arrigo Boito, who also collaborated with Verdi on his final opera, “Otello.”

The plot of “Falstaff” is based on the character Sir John Falstaff from William Shakespeare’s plays “Henry IV” and “The Merry Wives of Windsor.” In the opera, Falstaff, a portly knight, attempts to seduce two married women, Alice Ford and Meg Page, but is ultimately outwitted by them and their friends. The opera is a light-hearted comedy that pokes fun at human foibles and social conventions.

Verdi’s score for “Falstaff” is notable for its use of innovative orchestration and musical themes. The opera features a large cast of characters and intricate ensemble numbers, including several humorous fugues and canons.
