Carmen • Arena Sferisterio • 59° MACERATA OPERA FESTIVAL 2023

The 59th Macerata Opera Festival in 2023 will feature a production of Georges Bizet’s beloved opera “Carmen” at the Arena Sferisterio. The production will be directed by Daniele Menghini and conducted by Donato Renzetti.

“Carmen” is a four-act opera composed by Georges Bizet with a libretto by Henri Meilhac and Ludovic Halévy, based on a novella by Prosper Mérimée. The opera premiered at the Opéra-Comique in Paris on March 3, 1875, and has since become one of the most popular and frequently performed operas in the repertoire.

The opera tells the story of a passionate love affair between the soldier Don José and the fiery gypsy Carmen in 19th-century Spain. The score is filled with some of the most popular and recognizable music in the operatic repertoire, including the famous aria “Habanera” and the thrilling “Toreador Song.” The opera’s themes of love, passion, jealousy, and violence have made it a favorite among audiences worldwide.

In addition to the Opéra-Comique, “Carmen” has been performed at many of the world’s great opera houses and festivals, including the Metropolitan Opera in New York, La Scala in Milan, and the Royal Opera House in London. It has also been adapted into numerous films, ballets, and other works of art.
