AURELIANO IN PALMIRA • Gioachino Rossini • from August 12th to 21th, 2023
“Aureliano in Palmira” is an opera seria in two acts by Gioachino Rossini . The libretto, written by Gaetano Rossi, is based on the life of Emperor Aurelian and his conquest of the Palmyrene Empire in the 3rd century AD. The opera was first performed at La Scala in Milan in 1813, and was one of Rossini’s early successes.
The plot revolves around the rivalry between the Emperor Aurelian and the Queen of Palmyra, Zenobia, who leads her people in revolt against Rome. Aurelian falls in love with Zenobia, and their relationship becomes complicated as political tensions escalate. The story explores themes of power, love, and loyalty, and features some of Rossini’s most dramatic and virtuosic music.
“Aureliano in Palmira” is known for its challenging vocal writing and elaborate ensembles, including a famous trio for the three principal characters. The opera was revised and restaged several times during Rossini’s lifetime, with different endings and arias, reflecting the composer’s willingness to experiment with his works.
Although “Aureliano in Palmira” is not as well-known as some of Rossini’s other operas, it is still performed today and has been praised for its innovative use of orchestration, its emotional depth, and its compelling characters.
