ADELAIDE DI BORGOGNA

Gioachino Rossini is one of the most popular Italian bel canto opera composers. Who does not know this? His best-known operas have become popular hits, such as:
Il barbiere di Siviglia (The Barber of Seville), L’italiana in Algeri (The Italian Woman in Algiers), La Cenerentola (Cinderella), Il turco in Italia (The Turk in Italy), La gazza ladra (“he thieving magpie), Il viaggio a Reims, (The journey to Reims) and many others. They are all an important part of the standard repertoire of international opera houses today.

Pesaro in the Marche region, not far from Bologna and the popular seaside resorts of Rimini and Cattolica, has hosted the popular Rossini Opera Festival since 1980. So how about extending your summer vacation and taking the opportunity to enjoy one of the most beautiful opera festivals in Italy at one of the Pesaro theaters?

Pesaro is the birthplace of Gioachino Rossini (February 29, 1792 – November 13, 1868) and was declared a ‘Creative City’ of Music by UNESCO in 2017. The Rossini Opera Festival has contributed to the rediscovery of lesser-known masterpieces by the maestro that would otherwise have been forgotten.

Take the opportunity to discover more of Rossini: his personality and his favorite food. The Marche region was formative for Italian art history. Make a detour to Urbino, where the famous Renaissance painter Raphael (Raffaello Sanzio da Urbino) was born and where important works are on display in the Galleria Nazionale delle Marche.

ADELAIDE DI BORGOGNA • Gioachino Rossini • from August 13th to 22th, 2023

Adelaide di Borgogna is an opera in two acts by Gioachino Rossini . The libretto, by Giovanni Schmidt, is based on a historical drama by Antonio Salvioli. The opera premiered on December 27, 1817, at the Teatro Argentina in Rome.

The plot of Adelaide di Borgogna centers around the historical figure of Adelaide of Burgundy, who was the queen consort of King Otto I of Italy in the 10th century. The opera begins with Adelaide being accused of infidelity by her husband, who wants to divorce her and marry his mistress, Edburga. However, Adelaide is determined to clear her name and prove her innocence.

Adelaide’s supporters, including her brother, Berengar, and the Bishop of Como, conspire to help her. They bring in the young prince, Adelberto, who bears a striking resemblance to the king, and plan to use him to confuse Otto and his court. In a series of dramatic confrontations, Adelaide and her allies must outsmart Otto and Edburga to save her reputation and her marriage.

The music of Adelaide di Borgogna is typical of Rossini’s early operas, with arias, duets, and ensemble pieces that showcase the singers’ virtuosity and the composer’s gift for melody. The opera also features some impressive choral numbers, including a stirring finale in which the people of Italy rally behind Adelaide and her cause.

Adelaide di Borgogna is a historical drama with a strong female protagonist and themes of love, loyalty, and political intrigue. Although it is not as well-known as some of Rossini’s other works, it has been gaining in popularity in recent years and is a fascinating example of the composer’s early style.
