ADELAIDE DI BORGOGNA • Gioachino Rossini • from August 13th to 22th, 2023
Adelaide di Borgogna is an opera in two acts by Gioachino Rossini . The libretto, by Giovanni Schmidt, is based on a historical drama by Antonio Salvioli. The opera premiered on December 27, 1817, at the Teatro Argentina in Rome.
The plot of Adelaide di Borgogna centers around the historical figure of Adelaide of Burgundy, who was the queen consort of King Otto I of Italy in the 10th century. The opera begins with Adelaide being accused of infidelity by her husband, who wants to divorce her and marry his mistress, Edburga. However, Adelaide is determined to clear her name and prove her innocence.
Adelaide’s supporters, including her brother, Berengar, and the Bishop of Como, conspire to help her. They bring in the young prince, Adelberto, who bears a striking resemblance to the king, and plan to use him to confuse Otto and his court. In a series of dramatic confrontations, Adelaide and her allies must outsmart Otto and Edburga to save her reputation and her marriage.
The music of Adelaide di Borgogna is typical of Rossini’s early operas, with arias, duets, and ensemble pieces that showcase the singers’ virtuosity and the composer’s gift for melody. The opera also features some impressive choral numbers, including a stirring finale in which the people of Italy rally behind Adelaide and her cause.
Adelaide di Borgogna is a historical drama with a strong female protagonist and themes of love, loyalty, and political intrigue. Although it is not as well-known as some of Rossini’s other works, it has been gaining in popularity in recent years and is a fascinating example of the composer’s early style.
