The Story of Carmen
Carmen was composed in four acts by Georges Bizet . The libretto was written by Henri Meilhac and Ludovic Halévy. The story is based on the novella Carmen by Prosper Mérimée
The opera Carmen premiered in Paris in 1875 without much success. Georges Bizet did not live to see his international breakthrough, as he died in 1875, a few months after the premiere, at the age of 36. Today Carmen is one of the most popular and most frequently performed operas in the world.
The opera tells a dark story of violent and morbid love. The action of the opera Carmen takes place in Andalusia, mainly in Seville. It’s about seduction and love, about jealousy and dashed hope. Carmen is a sensual and strong-willed gypsy living out her love. The guard Don José falls madly in love with Carmen, although his mother wants him to marry the orphan Micaëla.
The beautiful smuggler Carmen promises Don José hot nights of love. When Carmen has to go to prison because of a dispute in the factory, Don José helps Carmen escape from prison and has to do it himself.
The bullfighter Escamillo is also in love with Carmen, who loves him back. This turns the jealous Don José from a passionate lover into a brutal murderer who ends up stabbing his beloved Carmen to death.
