The Story
The love story and the characters Roucher, Maddalena and Gérard that appear in it are fictitious.
The main actor of the opera is the poet Andrea Chénier.
At a festivity in a countess’s castle, the poet Andrea Chénieris asked to recite his poems. As a critic of the decadent lifestyle, Andrea Chénier uses flowery words to declaim the decadence of the festival while the people starve in winter. The servant Gerard also criticizes the nobility, but is secretly in love with the Countess’ daughter, Maddalena.
When Gérard secretly lets starving peasants into the ballroom and the Countess has them thrown out, Gérard quits his service at the castle.
Five years later, France is governed by Robbespierre, who turned the country into a police state.
Maddalena and Andrea Chénier are also on the list of enemies of the state.
Maddalena’s servant, Bersi, is being pursued by a spy. When Chénier wants to meet Maddalena, this is observed by the spy. The two confess their love. Gérard engages Chénier in a duel in which Gérard is wounded and Chénier is imprisoned.
Maddalena asks Gérard to release Chénier and offers him a night of love in return. Chénier is sentenced to death by the court.
Maddalena sneaks into the cell to die together with Chénier by the scaffold in eternal love.
